Your Horse’s Daily Care
Picture waking up every morning to a friend who relies on you for everything. That is what owning a horse is like. Horses are strong, beautiful animals, and they need a lot of care to stay happy and healthy. You have a daily routine for brushing your teeth or getting ready for school, and your horse needs one too. It covers more than feeding. You check on them, clean their home and spend real time together. A good daily routine helps your horse feel their best, and it builds a special bond between you. Here is what goes into giving your horse a good day, every day.
The Morning Routine: A Fresh Start
Start your horse’s day when the sun comes up, because the morning routine sets the tone for everything that follows.
Checking on Your Horse
Say good morning before you do anything else. Walk up quietly and give your horse a gentle pat. Then look into their eyes. Are they bright and clear? Check the nose for runny snot and make sure the ears are alert. Run your hands down each leg, because warmth or swelling can signal a problem. Watch how your horse moves, too. Are they stepping out happily, or do they look a bit stiff? Quick checks like these tell you whether your horse feels their usual self or needs a little extra attention.
Breakfast Time!
Your horse gets hungry just like you do, and feeding at the same time every morning matters. Horses are creatures of habit, and their tummies like consistency. Most eat hay, which is dried grass. Some also get special grain mixes, called concentrates, for extra energy or nutrients. Always make sure the feed buckets are clean.
Fresh, clean water matters most of all. Picture drinking from a dirty bucket. Your horse needs a lot of water through the day, so check the water bucket or trough. Is it full? Is it clean? If not, empty it, scrub it out and fill it with fresh water. Water is vital for their health, because it helps them digest food and stay hydrated.
A Clean Room for Your Horse
After breakfast, tidy up their room, which is called a stable or stall. The job is called “mucking out.” Use a fork to scoop out the dirty bedding (poop and wet spots). A clean stable protects your horse’s health, because it prevents skin problems and keeps them from breathing in bad smells. Everyone likes a clean bed to rest in, so add fresh, dry bedding to give your horse a comfy place to stand and lie down.
Mid-Day Fun and Care
Mid-day belongs to grooming and exercise, once the morning chores are done. You might ride, or you might just hang out together.
Grooming: More Than Just Looking Pretty
Grooming works as a mini-massage and a health check rolled into one. It makes your horse shiny, keeps their skin healthy and lets you check their body for bumps, scrapes or ticks. It is also a wonderful time to bond.
Here are the basic steps for a good grooming session:
- Curry Comb: Start with a rubber curry comb and work it in small circles all over your horse’s body, but not on the face or on the legs below the knees/hocks. It loosens dirt, mud and shedding hair.
- Dandy Brush: Next, take a stiff brush, called a dandy brush, and sweep away the dirt you just loosened. Use short, firm strokes in the direction of hair growth.
- Soft Brush: Now grab a soft brush, sometimes called a body brush. It smooths the coat and brings out a lovely shine. Use longer, gentle strokes.
- Face Brush: Use a very soft brush, or sometimes just a cloth, to clean gently around your horse’s eyes and nose. Take extra care in these sensitive areas.
- Mane and Tail: Manes and tails tangle easily, so use a special mane and tail comb or brush and work from the bottom up to remove knots gently. For extra shine and detangling, you can use a spray conditioner like Release Spray Conditioner. If the mane or tail needs a deeper clean, try a specialized shampoo from our Mane & Tail Treatment collection, such as Reluxe Mane & Tail Shampoo or Reluminate Shampoo. Our Coat & Body Care products suit regular body cleaning and a healthy coat, and they include the Revive Shampoo and the Repel Oil Shampoo. After shampooing, a cream like Refresh Mane & Tail Cream keeps the hair soft and strong.
- Hoof Pick: Do not skip this one. Use a hoof pick to dig the mud, rocks and dirt out of your horse’s hooves. Pay special attention to the “frog,” the V-shaped part in the middle of the hoof. Clean hooves prevent problems, and you can spot any stones that are stuck.
Exercise Time!
Horses are meant to move. Exercise is fantastic for their bodies and their minds. It keeps muscles strong and hearts healthy, and it helps them feel happy and calm. It can look like this:
- Riding: A ride, whether in an arena or on a trail, is a great way to exercise.
- Lunging: You guide your horse on a long rope in a big circle, which helps them warm up and stretch.
- Turnout: Letting your horse into a field (paddock) to run, graze and play with other horses is wonderful exercise, and it is very natural for them.
Always let your horse cool down slowly after exercise. Walk them gently until they breathe normally and are no longer too hot.
Taking Care of Their Gear
After a ride, quickly wipe down your saddle and bridle (called tack). Clean tack lasts longer and stays comfortable for your horse.
The Evening Wind-Down
As the day winds down, a final set of tasks gets your horse ready for a good night’s rest.
Final Checks Before Bed
Do a quick “once-over” of your horse before you leave for the night.
- Are their eyes still bright?
- Do they have any new cuts or scrapes from playing in the field?
- Feel their legs again. Are they cool and smooth, or is there any warmth or swelling?
This last check catches problems early, so you can help your horse right away if needed.
Dinner and Last Drinks
Your horse needs another meal to stay full through the night, usually more hay and sometimes a small amount of concentrates. Fresh water is essential, of course. Fill the water bucket to the brim so it does not run out overnight.
Comfortable Bedding
Check the stable one last time. Is the bedding still clean and fluffy, or does it need a quick tidy-up? A nice, soft bed encourages your horse to lie down and rest, and that matters a great deal for their health and well-being.
Good Night!
Where your horse spends the night depends on how they live. They might go out to a field, or you might tuck them into the stable. Whatever the setup, make sure they are safe, secure and comfortable.
Special Care and Important Helpers
Daily chores are only part of horse care. Sometimes your horse needs special help from experts, and you need to know when.
Keeping Hooves Healthy
A special person called a farrier keeps your horse’s hooves healthy. Hooves are like a horse’s shoes, and they grow constantly, so the farrier visits regularly, usually every 6-8 weeks, to trim and shape them. Nobody wants to walk around all day on sore feet. Balanced, healthy hooves help your horse walk comfortably.
Strong, Healthy Teeth
A horse dentist (often a vet) needs to check your horse’s teeth at least once a year, because horse teeth grow and change throughout their lives. Sharp points can develop and make eating painful. The process is called “floating,” and it smooths out those sharp edges, so your horse can chew properly and get all the nutrients they need.
When to Call the Vet
Call your veterinarian (horse doctor) whenever your horse gets sick or hurt. The vet is an important friend to your horse all year round, too. They give vaccinations to protect against diseases, and they help with deworming to keep your horse’s tummy healthy. Always know your vet’s number in case of an emergency.
Skin and Wound Care
Horses sometimes pick up little scrapes or skin irritations, especially when they spend a lot of time outside. For a small cut, gently clean it with a mild solution and apply a protective cream, like Repair Cream. For more serious wounds or skin problems, always ask your vet for advice. You can find more helpful items for these situations in our Specialized Care & Protection range.
Changing with the Seasons
Just as you change your clothes for different weather, your horse sometimes needs a little help too.
- Winter: In colder weather, some horses may need a blanket to stay warm, especially older horses or those with thinner coats.
- Summer: When it is hot and there are lots of flies, you might use fly spray or a lightweight fly sheet to protect your horse from annoying insects.
The Wonderful Benefits of a Routine
A daily routine is more than a list of chores. It is a powerful way to help your horse live their best life.
- A Healthy Horse: Regular checks let you notice small problems before they become big ones. Cleanliness helps prevent sickness, and good food and water keep your horse strong.
- A Happy Horse: Horses thrive on predictability. Knowing what to expect each day reduces stress and helps them feel secure.
- A Stronger Bond: All the time you spend grooming, feeding and caring for your horse builds trust and strengthens your connection. They learn to rely on you, and you learn to understand them better.
- More Enjoyable Horse Ownership: A healthy, happy horse makes your time together more fun and rewarding. You can enjoy riding, training or quiet moments with your equine friend without worrying about their well-being.
